Leisure & Hospitality

XANDARI

Based on its belief that hospitality can improve lives and also be good for the natural and cultural environments, The Muthoot Group embarked on a journey in 2001 to deploy its resources in the interest of entrepreneurial conservation.

Simplicity, elegance, and tranquility were keywords accompanying the conservation objective, and this led to The Muthoot Group acquiring Xandari Resort & Spa, one of Costa Rica’s most successful properties. Other Xandari properties in Kerala include a waterfront boutique destination in the spice trading district of Mattanchery and a private beach hideaway on the pristine sands of Mararikulam beach.

Now, MLHS is set to pioneer a sustainable chapter in tourism with its crown jewel — Xandari Reserve set on 2,000 acres of forest area just north of Goa. Xandari destinations across the world are partnerships with local communities - to conserve, protect and replenish the environment. From the harbour-front of Fort Kochi to the valleys of Costa Rica, the Xandari story is a testament to nature’s ways, soul of the land, and people’s faith.

Located in the idyllic wildlife township of Thekkady, Cardamom County is a nature retreat bordered on one side by the Periyar National Park and Tiger Reserve and its lush highland forest and wetlands ecosystem. On the other side, we are embraced by a vibrant spice-trading community typical of the hill stations above the Malabar coast. Walking distance from both the entry to the Periyar and our village neighbors, we also welcome you to simply relax at the resort.

This four-star resort rests atop a small hillock with 42 lovely cottages blending into the terraced slopes. Rooms are spacious and airy, with interiors that are simple and elegant. Each cottage also has its own little patio from where guests can enjoy the lush natural habitat.

Our All Spice restaurant is a tribute to its own name. A feast of tastes and textures, All Spice mixes ethnic traditions, natural ingredients and original fusion food concepts. Here, we source as much produce as possible from around the resort to create food experiences from our farm to your table. All Spice also has an expansive open-air terrace able to accommodate a large number of guests; an ideal venue for informal parties, grills and barbeque. Enjoy your choice of beer and wine at the restaurant or at Cinnabar, overlooking the most lovely pool the hills have to offer.

Cardamom County is also home to Ayura, our Green Leaf certified wellness center, where we offer an introduction to Ayurveda, an ancient way of life that promotes healthy living. The highly skilled team of Ayurveda specialists at Ayura provide tailor-made stress-relieving therapies, using handmade medicinal oils. For an experience that frees the body, mind and soul from all tensions, aches and pressures, Ayura is the perfect destination.

Guests can relax by the swimming pool, hit the gym, use snooker, table tennis, caroms for recreation or Yoga centres to energise, and spend time at the in-house library and shop at the Design store at the resort. For those who want to bring business closer to the great outdoors, the fully-equipped conference halls offer the ideal setting. The Pennycuick Hall can accommodate 250 guests, be it for celebrations, business gatherings, or public functions.

They talk about being spoilt for choice. Cardamom County shows you how!

The success of Cardamom County led to the expansion of Muthoot’s hospitality venture. In 2005, MLHS began a new project, moving from the cool climes of the Thekkady hills to below sea level in the Kerala backwaters near Alleppey. The inclusion of the houseboat cruise has become part and parcel of every travel itinerary focused on Kerala, and Xandari Riverscapes has achieved the highest rankings in the booming houseboat market. A dawn awash in pink and orange; verdant lands bearing rice, coconut and banana; ripples on Vembanad lake the only sound for miles; sightings of kingfishers and cormorants; seafood freshly harvested from the waters - Xandari Riverscapes has mastered the perfect backwater experience.

Our fleet of 10 traditional houseboats, called "kettuvallams", are designed to complement the tranquil passage on the picturesque backwaters. They are built with wood harvested from local jackfruit tree plantations, hand-stitched by local craftsmen with coconut fiber rope (coir) and strengthened with fish oil—a tradition pre-dating industrial engineering techniques but proving stronger than modern alternatives. We are committed to keeping this knowledge and traditions alive, with your support.

Each houseboat is furnished comfortably and attractively while hewing close to tradition. The boats have one, two or three air-conditioned bedrooms. All have an open-air living area and a fully- equipped kitchen. From the viewing deck, or through your bedroom’s picture window, and on a canoe through the backwater heartland, you will see simplicity in action, and the result is immediate: slown down, de-stress, rejuvenate.

Meals are an essential part of the Xandari Riverscapes experience. With your backwater excursion beginning at noon, sit down to a delectable lunch of classic Kerala cuisine cooked on board. Dinner comes calling under starlit skies on clear nights, at the spot where your boat rests to watch the day close out. Rise to the sight of sun rays dancing into your bedrooms, and watch the day unfold as the boat sails past a day in the life of the backwater country.

XANDARI RESORT & SPA

The colorscapes of Nature

APDO 1485-4050, Alajuela, Costa Rica

Tel: 506 2443 2020 Fax: 506 2442 4847

Art and architecture are highlights of the Xandari experience in Costa Rica. 24 spacious villas nestled on a 40-acre plantation are surrounded by lush gardens, with terraces facing spectacular views of Costa Rica’s majestic Central Valley day and night. Each is a unique design, with tropical colors and contemporary design.

When the land where Xandari Resort is now located was purchased in 1989, the property was almost entirely planted with coffee, except for those areas too steep to harvest. There were few birds or butterflies as there were no trees, bushes or flowers to attract them. Slowly, we began to replace areas of coffee with trees and tropical plants in an effort to return the land closer to its natural state. Here, our aim is to diminish the environmental impact of all hotel operations and to protect the invaluable natural resources of the area.

A private forest reserve with rivers, five natural waterfalls, and 2.5 miles of trails offers excellent hiking, birding, and communion with nature. Three pools, each with a unique view of coffee plantations, provide added incentive for a morning swim. Or, start your day in our Yoga studio and save your swim for later at our sunset pool. Wide range of natural treatments are offered in private jalapas at the Spa Village, each featuring a hot-tub overlooking forest and valley at 3,900 ft.

Xandari's terrace restaurant features a variety of healthy choices, from Costa Rican specialties to Mediterranean and Californinan cuisines. Our farm-to-table menu begins at breakfast and continues through lunch and dinner, featuring produce sourced from our own plantations using all-natural methods.

At Xandari, sustainability underlines our every effort. Guests are invited to plant native trees during their stay at Xandari. We research which trees, bushes and flowers especially attract, feed and provide shelter to the various types of birds and butterflies that inhabit Costa Rica and are constantly adding new varieties to our botanical gardens. Listen to the songbirds as you walk through the orchards or take any of the guided tours to the farms, orchid garden and greenhouse.

An experience that is a perfect testimonial to Nature's inherent ways, a community’s bond with the earth, and the promises of a responsible way of seeing the world - that is Xandari.

XANDARI HARBOUR

The Future Tense of Past Perfect

V/40, Bazaar Road, Mattanchery, Kochi, Kerala 682002.

Phone: 0484 2223115/6/7/9

Website: www.xandari.com

Gateway to the oldest Jewish community in the world and the last vestiges of colonialism, Mattanchery is anchored in history. Its identity as the nucleus of a spice trade spanning centuries breathes today in still-standing godowns and warehouses. Straddling Bazar Road, these structures once stocked spices like pepper and cinnamon before traders moved across the harbour, to the thriving city of Ernakulam. The bustle of trade lulled, several of the buildings crumbled away and others waited - with downed shutters - for a new calling.

The century-old warehouses that make up Xandari Harbour are some of the last. Preceding MLHS' conservation-focussed thinking, the three buildings that comprise the property served different purposes. One served as a chummery or lodging house for ship captains, eventually becoming a modest hotel. The other waterfront godowns housed spices and groceries like rice before they were used by fishermen as pass-through.

Respectfully restored and largely untouched, the buildings and their maritime legacy find a renewed being today in Xandari Harbour. This 16-room gem box of a hotel is walkable distance from Calvathy boat jetty and midway between Vasco da Gama Square and the famous Dutch Palace.

Views of the harbour and a bustling spice trade mark the 14 tastefully done guestrooms and 2 suites. From the spectacular Harbour Suite – with water views on three sides - watch colorful fishing boats head out to sea. The Spice Suite also looks over the water, with the added feature of offering snapshots of Bazaar Road. Of the 14 guestrooms, four are on the waterfront, four have private gardens and the rest have large picture windows that frame panoramas of blue and the vibrant colours of trade. The infinity pool in the center of the property, which seems to float on the edge of Kochi harbour, offers the perfect place to refresh after a day on the town.

The menu at the all-day restaurant, 51, is based on the coast’s position as a trade magnet throughout history. For thousands of years, starting with Egyptians, ships have docked here in search of spices. With the spice and the silk routes intermingling, Eastern Mediterranean influences entered local cuisines. This blend - what we fondly call Malabar Soul Food – brings together Indian and Mediterranean ingredients and food ways, slow cooked for our guests to enjoy.

Xandari Harbour is a nostalgic reminder of ancient sea routes and trade; of visitors and kindred who left a mark on the landscape, faith, and culture of the land.
This is the firm anchorage of our conservation story.

XANDARI PEARL

Where simplicity, elegance, and nature meet

Life is simply beautiful at the beach. And that is our orienting theme at Xandari Pearl on Mararikulam Beach, rated one of the top five "Hammock Beaches" in the world by National Geographic. Here at this ‘secret’ locale, in the company of those you most want to be with, simplicity is the perfect setting. The white sands, the truant sea breeze ruffling your hair, and the skies showing off their colours as you sit down to a plate of the day’s catch cooked your way - the seaside story is yours to share. A Pearl beyond price: a simple, organic, comforting, private hideaway.

A short drive from Xandari Riverscapes - our houseboat operation on Lake Vembanad - Xandari Pearl comprises 20 villas spread across 18 acres of the quaint fishing village of Mararikulam. You are never too far from the sea in any of our 20 villas, five of which have plunge pools. Nestled in large gardens, the villas are a statement in comfort and privacy. Designed to accommodate two, all villas are crafted with the concept of laidback luxury in a lush, natural setting: bathrooms with an open to the air shower area and a dining spot in a sand-lined patio. Additionally, each villa has a comfortable garden-facing desk and a complimentary mini-bar. Once inside the curved walls of your villa, lounge in the hammock outdoors with a book or savor the indulgence of a shower open to the sky.

Xandari Pearl's 80 seat all-day dining restaurant overlooks a pool that finds its shape around coconut, mango and cashew trees. Freshness is guaranteed on all counts, with the kitchen using organic produce from the gardens and the day’s catch from the waters. In our chef’s company, go on a culinary adventure through our carefully tended edible landscape of land and sea.

At Xandari Pearl, green is a way of life. Walk between vegetable and fruit saplings, stopping to listen to green-thumbed gardeners explain the journey of the cashew apple and the nut before it reaches you. Even paddy is cultivated on site and over 30 varieties of bananas growing adjacent to the restaurant form a prized genome cluster.Through this bond with the land and the sea, we share the story of how generations lived by the currents, planned by the tides and followed the sun.
